JURASSIC POKEMON WORLD

November 3th 2020

Jurassic Pokemon World is a Jurassic Park reimagination that replaces dinosaurs with Pokemon. Everything you are to expect from a action movie it’s packed into this small short film. Dinosaurs, guns, explosions! Is there more in life than this?

Making this short film was a handful. Let me begin by saying that I have been wanting to make this short film for the longest time, and to finally see it outside my head takes a lot of weight off my shoulders.

It all started by me visiting the place a couple of years prior to shooting this film, I am always looking for places to shoot, and finding a place with a good amount of vegetation with no people around in New York is not easy for me.

After forming a crew of three people, Sarah, Mike, sand me chose to work in this project after a quick brain storming session. I had a skeleton of a script a couple of days later and the project snowballed after that,

I was worried Mike would hurt himself while doing the shot where his is falling to the ground while running, But if you know my filmography, you haven’t been in my films if you have never fallen to the ground in them.

The shooting day was a nightmare, rain, wind, crickets, cicadas, people, sun, clouds, trees, poison ivy, battery, the giant hole I got in the back of my pants every time I shoot Sarah scenes, whish ended not being that noticeable due to the fact I was wearing dark blue shorts underneath, but it is there if you pay attention. The elements are scary , yo. There is a shot where I am looking to my left hearing Mike’s radio message, but in reality, I couldn’t avoid looking at the direction the kids were playing and splashing in the river. And yes, all that sound is there in the raw footage, I just had to recreate it all because it was unusable.

Talking about raw, let’s talk about black magic RAW. This is not my first time using a black magic camera nor using Davinci resolve. But is is my first time, using BRaw and using Davici as a editing software, something that is new to the software. And you know what, I like it, It is very responsive and color grading in Davinci is very nice.

I shoot the entire thing in 6k Braw 12:1 compression, and coming from a 5D Mark 3 14bit RAW user, I most say that I am finally happy with the work flow. The only issue is that I also had to do the VFX in 6K. Luckily, I didn’t have to render glass materials, and blender new AI denoiser in combination with Optixs made this project possible to complete in time. The big issue? The R@&^% smoke system is broken in blender for almost two years now. I managed to get somethings working somehow.

At last, I wanned to render the entire project in 8K yet I wasn’t able, I still learning my way into editing with Davinci Resolve. I only hope to get better.
